Agricultural and municipal stakeholders recently gathered at Linvilla Orchard for a behind-the-scenes look at how local partnerships are turning food scraps and yard waste into a valuable resource. The tour, hosted by the Chester County Planning Commission, AgConnect, and the Chester/Delaware County Farm Bureau in collaboration with Kitchen Harvest and Linvilla Orchard, highlighted the composting process, facility operations, and the growing role composting plays in supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing waste across the region.

Visitors learned how materials such as food scraps, non-usable produce, leaves, and plant waste are transformed into nutrient-rich compost over a six-month period. The tour also showed innovative practices, including natural fly control through parasitic wasps and the production of OMRI-certified compost suitable for organic growing. Discussions focused on opportunities to strengthen composting programs, support local agriculture, and expand waste diversion efforts, demonstrating how collaboration between farms, municipalities, businesses, and residents can create lasting environmental and agricultural benefits.
